Rompers
One piece. All eyes on you.
Rompers for Women
Rompers for women save you one decision every morning: top and shorts arrive as a single piece. Baindoux makes two in Giza cotton terry. The Playsuit has a shirt collar and a red zip, the Combishort short sleeves and a tie belt. You wear either one with sandals at the beach club or with a jacket at dinner.
Two rompers, two moods
Playsuit: collar and zip
The Playsuit is sleeveless, with a pointed shirt collar and a red zip down the front. Two flap pockets sit on the hips, and the hem ends in a short, straight leg. The red zip is the only accent, so the Playsuit looks dressed in every colour: nautical blue, dark blue, red and green.
Combishort: sleeves and a belt
The Combishort has short sleeves, a round neck and a tie belt at the waist. White trim outlines the neckline, the sleeves and the hem, and a small red emblem sits on the chest. The look is sporty and neat at the same time, like a tennis dress with shorts. The Combishort comes in club blue with white.
From children's playwear to the Riviera
The word romper comes from the verb to romp, which meant to play boisterously in 1709. By 1909, rompers were small overalls for children, made for climbing and running without torn clothes.
Women took the idea to the beach. In the 1930s and 1940s, the playsuit appeared as a one-piece outfit for sport and summer holidays, often with a matching skirt to wear over it in town. The shape never left the resort wardrobe, because it solves one problem well: a full outfit in one move.
Romper, playsuit or jumpsuit
- Romper: the American name for a one-piece with a shorts hem.
- Playsuit: the British and European name for the same short one-piece.
- Jumpsuit: a one-piece with full-length trousers, originally a parachutist’s garment.
Both Baindoux pieces are short, so on this page they sit together under rompers.
Terry, built for the water's edge
Terry is a cotton weave with small loops that absorb water and feel soft on warm skin. A terry romper goes over a damp swimsuit without clinging. Baindoux terry is made from Giza cotton, so the loops stay dense and the colour stays deep after a summer of washing. The properties of Giza cotton explain why.
Where to wear a romper
The outfits for Ibiza and what to wear in St. Barts both start with pieces that go from sand to terrace.
- Daytime: the Playsuit with flat sandals and a bucket hat for women.
- Evening: the Combishort with one of the women’s jackets over the shoulders.
- Travel: either romper alone, packed flat, ready after a day in a suitcase.
Order online or try it on in store
A one-piece fits on two points at once, the chest and the hips, so the right size matters. You order online with the delivery and returns terms on one page, or you try it on in one of the Baindoux stores.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a romper and a jumpsuit?
A romper is a one-piece garment with a shorts hem. A jumpsuit is a one-piece garment with full-length trousers.
What is a terry cloth romper?
A terry cloth romper is a one-piece with shorts made from terry, a cotton fabric with small loops on the surface. The loops absorb water, which makes a terry romper a practical cover-up for the pool.
How do you wear a romper after 40?
A romper after 40 looks best with a tailored detail, such as a shirt collar or a belt, and a hem at mid-thigh or lower. A light jacket over the shoulders gives the outfit an evening finish.
