Women's Dresses
One dress from the pool to the table
A summer day on the coast has three settings: the pool, lunch in town and dinner at sunset. Most wardrobes need a change of clothes for each one. A short cotton dress covers all three.
The outfits for Capri and what to wear in Miami both start with the same piece: a light dress that dries in the sun and still looks right at the table. The Rendez-Vous was cut for exactly that day.
Where the dress and the mini dress come from
The word dress comes from the Old French dresser, meaning to arrange or to set straight. From around 1300, to dress meant to prepare something properly. By the 1630s, a dress was the garment itself: a skirt and bodice made to be seen.
The mini dress arrived much later. In the mid-1960s, Mary Quant in London and André Courrèges in Paris cut hemlines far above the knee. Mary Quant named the mini after her favourite car. The short hem became a symbol of freedom, and it never left the summer wardrobe.
Terry: the fabric of the beach club
Terry is a cotton weave with small loops on the surface. The loops absorb water and feel soft on warm, salty skin, which is why towels and bathrobes are made of terry. A terry dress takes that comfort and gives it a tailored shape.
Baindoux terry is made from Giza cotton. The long Egyptian fibre makes the loops finer and denser, so the fabric looks smooth from a distance and keeps its colour after many washes. The properties of Giza cotton explain the difference with regular cotton.
Rendez-Vous colours
The Rendez-Vous comes in 6 colours. Each colour gives the same dress a different mood:
- White: the classic pool dress, bright against tanned skin and gold buttons.
- Dark blue and club blue: the evening options, calm enough for a restaurant.
- Nautical blue: the colour of the harbour, easy to combine with white and sand.
- Red and electric yellow: the statement colours for a day on the boat.
Pair a bright dress with neutral accessories, and a neutral dress with one bright accent, such as a hat or a jacket.
How to style a short summer dress
A mini dress in a strong colour needs very little. Three choices decide the look:
- Layer: one of the cropped women’s jackets over the shoulders for the evening breeze.
- Hat: a bucket hat for women in a matching tone for the hours in the sun.
- Shoes: flat leather sandals by day, a low heel for dinner.
Prefer shorts to a skirt? The rompers for women give you the same one-piece ease with a shorts hem.
