Women's Jackets
The jacket for evenings by the sea
A Riviera evening starts warm and ends with a breeze off the water. A light jacket covers exactly that gap. Terry weighs little, folds into a beach bag and keeps its shape after a day in the car.
The outfits for Saint-Tropez follow the same logic: a light layer over a short dress, and nothing that looks like effort. The same jacket works for a late dinner in Monaco or a drink on the terrace in Miami.
Five jackets, one fabric
Every Baindoux jacket for women starts from the same terry cloth. The cut decides the mood.
Darling Jackie: the club blazer
The Darling Jackie is a single-breasted blazer with notched lapels, patch pockets and contrast piping along every edge. Club blue with white piping is the classic. Sizes run from XS to L, and the blazer comes in 16 colour combinations. Made to hit the town, and to leave it last.
Le Temps Perdu: the collarless jacket
Le Temps Perdu means “lost time” in French. The jacket has a round, collarless neck, gold buttons, two flap pockets on the chest and a curved hem. Contrast piping in a second colour traces the edges. The jacket comes in 13 colour combinations, from white with red to electric yellow with white.
Gaby: the cropped shirt jacket
Gaby is a cropped jacket with a shirt collar, wide sleeves and gold buttons down the front. The boxy cut sits just above the hips and layers over a dress or a tee without effort. Gaby comes in 16 solid colours, from black and bordeaux to pink and electric yellow.
Sunset: the bomber
The Sunset is a quilted terry bomber with a red zip, ribbed collar and cuffs and a drawcord at the hem. Open it, and the lining shows a photograph by Slim Aarons, the photographer of jet-set summers. The bomber comes in 15 colours. One warning from the label: make sure your boyfriend does not borrow it.
Sunset WS: the sleeveless cape
The Sunset WS keeps the bomber’s zip and photo lining, and drops the sleeves. The result is a wide, cape-like layer in white, made for bare arms on a warm evening.
Where the jacket comes from
The word jacket comes from the Old French jaquet, a short coat with sleeves. In the mid-15th century, a jacket was a practical garment for working men. The pieces in this collection each carry a later chapter of that story.
- The blazer: by 1880, students at St John’s College, Cambridge, called the bright red flannel jackets of the Lady Margaret Boat Club “blazers”. The Darling Jackie keeps that rowing-club spirit in the piping.
- The collarless jacket: in 1954, Coco Chanel presented a short, collarless jacket with braided edges and gold buttons. Le Temps Perdu takes that line and swaps tweed for terry.
- The bomber: the bomber started as a flight jacket for pilots in cold cockpits. The Sunset turns it into a jacket for warm nights.
Why terry instead of tweed
Tweed and bouclé jackets are made of wool, which is too warm for a summer evening in the south. Terry gives you the same structured look in a cotton that breathes. Baindoux terry is made from Giza cotton, the Egyptian cotton with an extra-long fibre, so the loops stay soft and the colour stays deep after many washes. The properties of Giza cotton explain why the fabric lasts longer than regular cotton.
Colour combinations
Most Baindoux jackets pair a body colour with piping in a second colour. Three groups cover the range:
- Classics: dark blue with white, black with white and nude with white. These go with every dress and every pair of shorts.
- Riviera colours: nautical blue, club blue and electric yellow, solid or with dark blue piping. These look their best against white and a tan.
- Bold contrasts: pink with green, brick with purple and purple with blue. One of these is the only statement an outfit needs.
Match the piping to one other piece in your outfit, and keep the rest calm.
How to wear a short jacket
- Dinner: the Darling Jackie or Le Temps Perdu over one of the women’s dresses, with bare legs and sandals.
- Daytime: Gaby open over a white tee and women’s shorts in a matching colour.
- Late night: the Sunset over women’s tops and white trousers, zipped up when the wind turns.
